Life requires gear changes
The other day I was reflecting on my favourite books at various stages of my life and what they say about me.
30 - Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill... it was about mindset, my priority was to win at any cost. IT worked, I got traction.
35 – Good Strategy/Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt... let’s bring in some precision and skill into things, my priority was to build something sustainable that has a big impact. It worked, I created a strategy to have a business with a global impact.
40 - The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer... it doesn’t have to be so hard, time to breathe into life and expand my heart and soul, my priority is peace and joy. It’s working, I’m happy and feeling more peace than ever.
What’s right for each of us is different; it depends on the stage we are at. I didn’t need or want peace at age 30, but by 40 a lack of it was becoming hard to bear.
I find this useful to remember if I find myself judging someone else for not being ‘like me’ (because we all think what we’re doing is right, because it’s our best effort to be right, for us, at that point).
If you go deep into stages and master them, you can move on. You don’t necessarily leave them behind, but you add layers on top of them, you grow and become more.
If something’s worked for you but it’s no longer working, perhaps it’s time to shift gears.
Otherwise you just red line yourself at that stage and blow up the engine.
